"Night of the Three Kings" MORGAN COUNTY CITIZEN
A Feast for the Mouth and Eyes by Kathryn Purcell
Posted January 11, 2007

Magi met Medieval fare at the third annual "Night of the Three Kings" Medieval supper feast in Madison.

The Madison Museum of Fine Art fund-raiser was held on Saturday, January 6 at the Museum.

The Museum chose to commemorate the "Night of the Three Kings" because it was during the 12th day of the Christmas season that the Wise Men arrived at the Christ child. The date also allows plenty of time for people who wish to attend the event to conclude their holiday travels.

"We try to use the event to remind people that Christmas isn't a day, it's a season," Museum Director Michele Bechtell said.

The feast was described as "Medieval meets the South" by Bechtell and featured Southern as well as Medieval cuisine.

The food, prepared by Executive Chef Matt Minton of Richland Creek Restaurant, included dishes like black-eyed peas and greens as well as tomato pudding, turkeys and chickens.

Minton's favorite item to prepare for the feast? The roast hog.

"There's just something about cooking something that big," Minton said. "It means you're going to have a lot of people over."

Minton said that it takes him two days to prepare the food. The roast hog itself takes one and a half days.

A King's Cake was also made for the event. There were three prize charms in the cake - one representing frankincense, gold and myrrh.

According to Bechtell, entertainment for the "Night" included fire-eater and juggler on stilts Geoff Estes, principal of Monsignor Donovan High School in Athens, and horn players Lee Abney, a Madison attorney with Lambert Reitman and Abney LLC, and Leslie Mullins.

Bechtell said that the turnout each year reflects growing support of the event.

"It reflects the regional membership base of support the Museum has," Bechtell said. "More and more people are coming in from farther and farther away."

Bechtell said that she thinks people enjoyed themselves. "Success (of the event) is measured in whether people have a good time," Bechtell said.
