Flat Stanley Tours the Art Museum
In Spring 2007, the Madison Museum of Fine Art received the following letter: "Dear Madison Museum of Fine Art: My name is Deya. I am in the third grade at North Springs Elementary School. My art class is reading the story of Flat Stanley. We are making our own Flat Stanley and mailing him to art museums all over the United States. My classmates and I would like to learn about your museum. Please take my Stanley on a tour of your museum. Please mail him back telling us what he did along with some information about what we might see if we could visit your art museum. Thank you, Deya North Springs Elementary School Museum docent Rachel Gallagher and her siblings Sara and Levi took Flat Stanley on a tour of the art museum. Flat Stanley found many exciting objects in the museum. He saw orginal works of art by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali, Jean Dufy, Rembrandt, August Renoir, and Paul Cezanne. He also saw ancient Asian art and artifacts and hand carved Shona stone sculptures by African artists. The Madison Museum of Fine Art is open free to the public with no regular admission fee. However, Stanley was SO impressed with what he saw at the museum and SO enjoyed his museum visit that he voluntarily placed a charitable donation in the jar when he left! This made him feel good that he is helping the museum to provide endearing visual art history experiences for him and other visitors from around the world. Thank you, Flat Stanley for coming to visit the Madison Museum of Fine Art in Georgia! We look forward to meeting your family and friends when you bring them with you on your next visit to our museum. When Stanley arrived at the Museum, he took a few minutes to remember his museum manners that protect other museum visitors and the valuable museum objects held in safety for the enjoyment of future generations.Stanley recalled that museum manners include the use of quiet "inside voices," no running, no jumping, no touching (in museums we breathe with our eyes), no cell phones, and thankfulness by using the words "please" and "thank you.".
