What do beauty, vision, strength and endurance make? “A Monumental Journey.” That is what the Madison Museum of Fine Art celebrates on October 8 when the National Monuments Foundation and The Coca-Cola Company honor the Museum as a select Georgia venue to exhibit two magnificent Classical bronze statues by Scottish sculptor, Alexander Stoddart.

Arriving by horse drawn caisson with marching band and four black Percheron horses measuring 18 hands, the two monumental sculptures will travel up Main Street to the town square. Following the Town Parade, the statues will then rest at the Museum in view of the historic domed Courthouse for one night only. Titled “Peace and Justice,” each statue measures 8 ˝ feet tall and weighs 1 ˝ tons. The sculptures are destined for the Atlanta Millennium Gate, the largest monument of its kind since the Jefferson Memorial. This, the Museum’s inaugural temporary exhibition, shows what remarkable public exhibitions this Museum can attract and will continue to produce in this region of Georgia.

On this special evening, Rodney Cook, President of the National Monuments Foundation will speak on the importance of public art and trace the journey of these statues from Scotland to Madison and beyond. The Museum will then honor its own monumental journey from vision to reality. And our journey has been remarkable! In less than eighteen months, the Museum has gained rave reviews from around the world for providing outstanding visual art history experiences. Parents, children, and teachers enjoy a growing permanent collection of 48 donated original masterworks spanning 2000 years of art history. Membership support enabled the Museum to eliminate entrance fees this year and open free to the public. And the Museum now offers continuous art film in its Theatre Corner with large screen LCD projection. On October 8, the Museum’s first temporary exhibition will showcase two remarkable sculptures that will be viewed by millions of people over the coming centuries. This is history in the making and affirmation that the new Museum does indeed provide “a sublime walk into the history of art and beauty.”

Sincerely,
Michele L. Bechtell, Director
