The Museum also features an outstanding collection of Asian Buddhist art and artifacts that date from the 3rd and 4th centuries. These ancient works make an immediate impact on the contemporary viewer, and the serenity, poise, and introspection-- hallmarks of fine Buddhist sculpture-- are exemplified in the Museum's collection. Important works include stone sculptures from Cambodia, wooden pieces from Thailand, a fine Mahayana stone sculpture of a Bodhisattva from China, and lovely examples of Chinese and Korean porcelain.
From the African tradition, the museum presents a superb collection of African stone sculptures created by the founding fathers of the Shona sculpture movement. The sculptures, personally selected by Frank McEwen, first director of the National Gallery in Zimbabwe, toured 9 cities as a travelling exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1968/69. These charming stone "creatures" fuse animal and human features to the delight of many viewers, old and young alike.
To enhance the quality and breadth of the museum's permanent collection, the Madison Museum of Fine Art welcomes charitable donations of original works of art.
