Salvador Dali
Salvador Dali
Spanish, (1904-1989)
Born in the Catalonia region of Spain, Dali exhibited early genius and eventually won fame as a Surrealist. To assist his creative process, he invented the “paranoic-critical” method, where an artist experiments with delusions by creating images and associations during the act of perception.
Throughout his art, Dali experimented with Freudian theory that dream symbolism reveals the unconscious mind. But in contrast to psychoanalysis where the therapist interprets a patient’s unconsciously constructed symbols, Dali consciously created highly controlled “delusions.”
Works by this artist are held in the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Salvador Dali Museum, Birmingham Museum, and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
