Yvan Theys
"Swing Dance," Pastel on Paper dated 1981 by Yvan Theys
Belgian, (b. 1936)
One of the fathers of the Belgian Pop Art movement, Theys was born in Marke, Belgium. During his classical early phase influenced by the avante garde Cobra art movement, the artist produced semiabstract works of brilliant color, violent brushwork, and distorted human figures reminiscent of primitive American folk art and Action Painting. The name Cobra metaphorically combined the names of the artist home cities spiriting the movement with COpenhagen as the head, BRussels the body and Amsterdam the tail. Theys later adopted a different treatment of space with a different form of abstraction. His works reflect his reactions to world events and his surroundings. The artist exhibit widely around the world and is best known for his vibrant pastels, paintings, and three dimensional works.
Works Held in the Tourcoing Museum in Belgium, the Museum d’Ixelles in Brussels, Museum Elsene in Brussels, Museum of Modern Art in Oostende, Museum of Modern Art in Brussels, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, and the Frederich Weisman Foundation of Art, Los Angeles.
