Joseph Perrin
"Traffic," Gouache on Paper,
Signed and dated 1959, by Joseph Perrin
American, (20th century)
One of the few Georgia Modern artists, Perrin directed the Art Department of Georgia State University for many years. His work evolved from a structural abstract depiction of objects and themes to an abstract ‘colorist’ style devoid of recognizable images.
This modern gouache on paper illustrates how an abstract painting can draw the viewer into a carefully constructed space that depicts the essence of a subject without creating a realistic rendering. Can you find the hidden pedestrians, traffic light, and telephone poles in this cosmopolitan puzzle piece of art?
Works Held in the Museum of Contemporary Art – Georgia and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
2004 Gift to the Museum from Ms. Elizabeth Shearer.
