6th Century Male Torso
Sandstone Sculpture
Pre-Angkorian /Cambodia
Torso of Man
6th Century, Phnom Da style
This graceful sandstone is likely a sculpture of a male deity in the Vishnuite pantheon. This deity is depicted standing in tribhanga with his left leg slightly bent. He wears a snug fitting sampot (loin cloth) secured by an oval shaped buckle with fan-shaped pleated folds cascading down the front. The edges of the cloth pass between the legs and tie in the back forming an “anchor” drape.
Pre-Angkorian art is rare compared to examples from the following period.
Phnom Da sculptors typically rendered detailed anatomically correct images with an elegant purity of line and a realistic and life-like quality
