Reclining Polychrome Buddha

Wood Sculpture Thailand Reclining Buddha 18th – 19th Century This rare and charming example of Buddhist sculpture is notable for its wood medium and style. The reclining Buddha wearing a diaphanous robe is marked by a full oval face flanked by large pendulous earlobes, gently arched eyebrows, almond shaped eyes and slightly smiling mouth. The reclining Buddha laying on his right side and holding his head with his hand symbolizes the death of Buddha at which time he called his disciples under a tree and he passed into para-nirvana.
