Highlights of the Permanent Collection

“Excellent collection!” Jerry O’Neill, Christchurch, New Zealand
.......“Your Museum shows exceptional taste, both in the art exhibited and in the design and decor of the exhibition area.” Leftwich and Ursula Kimbrough, Savannah
............“I have been to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and for its size, this is just as impressive as that.” Lory Schroen, Augusta

A member of the American Association of Museums, the Madison Museum of Fine Art features an exceptional collection of visual art spanning over 2000 years of art history. Visitors will find endearing original works by American and European masters including Pablo Picasso, Joseph Leyendecker, Clementine Hunter, Marguerite Wildenhain, and Salvador Dali. The Museum also features an outstanding collection of Asian Buddhist art and artifacts that date from the 3rd and 4th centuries and exemplify the hallmarks of fine Buddhist sculpture-serenity, poise, and introspection. From the African tradition, the museum presents a superb collection of hadn carved stone sculptures created by the founding fathers of the Shona sculpture movement and selected by Frank McEwen, the first director of the National Gallery in Zimbabwe. These sculptures toured 9 cities in a travelling exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1968.
